Simple Past Stumbles
Here’s a very common mistake some students have been making frequently when speaking in the Simple Past: “I needed to went to College last weekend…” or “ I wanted to spoke with my friend yesterday…”
Obviously every time this happens I immediately bring up the correct grammar. Let me just remind you what I’ve taught in class: “ I needed to go to College last weekend…” and “I wanted to speak with my friend yesterday…” That’s plain simple. You use only the first verb in the second column (Simple Past), the following verb must be in the infinitive.
