THEY SOAR FOR THE SECOND QUARTER
My latest post words are absolutely essential in the financial world and stock markets. Some students still struggle to find the best words when it comes to terms like “as ações sobem rapidamente” (market shares soar) no “Segundo trimestre” (second quarter). To clear up a little more, I chose this short review from Corante so that we can check the use of these phrases from a journalist report perspective.

“The headline at Macworld reads Apple’s Macintosh market share soars 16 percent. The details (I’ve added the emphasis):

‘With Mac shipments rising from 655,000 to 760,000 year-over-year for the second quarter, Apple’s U.S. market jumped from 4.4 percent in 2005 to 4.8 percent in 2006 — a double-digital growth of 16 percent, according to market research firm IDC.’

Apple is definitely on a roll (a period of sucess and good luck), but, at least to my admittedly math-challenged mind, an increase from 4.4 to 4.8 per cent seems more like a nudge (a gently push) than a soar (a quick increase).

In this case the word soar could be replaced by "surge" or "skyrocket" (my fav).
Now, I don't think Mac shares will in any way plummet in the short-term.
