THE TREES

This one comes from “The Metamorphosis and Other Great Stories” by Franz Kafka, published by Penguin:

“For we are like the trunks of trees in the snow. Apparently they rest smoothly on the surface and with a gentle push we should be able to shift them. No, that one cannot, for they are firmly attached to the ground. But see, that too is only apparent”.

Please, save these words for further explanation and discussion in class along this week.

does it mean all we are is appearance and superficial? if that is true, is there any solid foundation for my beliefs?

He means that we must think that things may not be what
appear, and knowing this, the possibilities increase, or to the bad side, or the good side. Of course, in the case of Kafka, always for the bad side hehehehe Very good choice of text! Choose Dostoiévski next week! :)

This says one of the most simple of life: the things aren't what they seem!

somebory can explain what the text means? I Can't understand. It's too philosophic for me.

exactly...something to rack your brain (+-"quebrar a cabeça") then we can talk about it in class.I can tell you guys that though people are apparently rooted in their convictions and paradigms when facing the truth they can be shifted as trees, 'cause even the ground where they are may be shallow (raso).

People can change their opinions, their convictions as time goes by. Sometimes in our lifes, some unexpected things happen and they can change our world perception.

Most people are certainly firmly enrooted in the ground, but probably no one of those "trunks" will be in the same place forever. We all shift litle by litle during our lives. And this mobile character of our way of thinking makes us to evolve.

Every moments in our lives we are able to change our minds. I agree whit Kafka but he went very deep in the text.

Heu folks! After your comments I feel like if I have nothing to say!

We can not let people say what we can not do, think or belive. Best minds did things that we could not imaginr, because they belived in thenselves.
